November Theme: Masterpiece - Matisse

We're back with one last artist-inspired box for 2024!

This time, I chose an artist whose work is less painterly and interested with light than Van Gogh or Monet, and more focused on shape and bold colour. The earrings in the Matisse box will definitely be different to anything I've ever made before, but I'm really excited to get stuck into it.

Henri Matisse was a French artist, known for his work with bright, decorative pattern and considered to be revolutionary to the modern art movement. Interestingly, the cut-out paper pieces that are most closely associated with his name were actually created in his later life, once his health and mobility had deteriorated. He would paint paper with gouache and then use scissors to cut it into organic shapes.

(At that point in his life, he also did a series of drawings from his bed, using a big stick with charcoal on the end to draw on the wall. It isn't relevant to this box, but I think it's pretty cool. Seriously, look up some of the pictures of his studio - he was beyond determined to keep working despite his frailty and came up with some very creative solutions.)

Matisse considered his paper cut-outs to be secondary to his principal art form of painting, but today they are known as some of his most important works.

The November box will be very big on the paper cut-out end of things with some super fun earring designs!

Daisy Tier: The smaller box will contain a stud pack with three pairs of earrings. Each one will be inspired by Matisse's cut-outs including The Sheaf (1953). It will also contain a tote bag (painted by me!) with a cut-out pattern on it.

Peony Tier: The big box will contain all of the above, as well as pair of hand-cut bird earrings, inspired by Matisse's Oceania, the Sky (1946).
